スコットランドのグラスゴー出身。グラスゴー芸術大学を卒業後、BBCスコットランドでグラフィックデザイナーとして働きながら俳優を目指す。「Living Apart Together」（82）で映画デビュー。続く「ローカル・ヒーロー　夢に生きた男」（83）で注目を集め、スティーブン・フリアーズ監督版「危険な関係」（88）にも出演。コメディドラマ「官僚天国！今日もツジツマ合わせマス」（05〜12）で主演を務める傍ら、2008年には英国の長寿TVシリーズ「ドクター・フー」で第12代ドクターに抜てきされ、17年まで同役を演じた。近年の映画出演作に「パディントン」（15）、ラビット役の声を務めた「プーと大人になった僕」（18）、「どん底作家の人生に幸あれ！」（19）、「ザ・スーサイド・スクワッド　“極”悪党、集結」（21）など。TVシリーズ「マスケティアーズ パリの四銃士」（14）ではリシュリュー卿を演じた。
