5歳の時に父のロバート・ダウニー監督作で映画デビュー。高校中退後、本格的に俳優として活動を始め、1987年「ピックアップ・アーチスト」で映画初主演を務める。「チャーリー」（92）でアカデミー主演男優賞に初ノミネート。人気ドラマ「アリー・myラブ」（00～01）で主人公の恋人役が好評を博すなど、順調にキャリアを重ねていたが、薬物トラブルで一線を退く。薬物依存を克服した後、03年に俳優業に復帰し、「ゾディアック」（06）などに出演。 08年、主人公トニー・スターク役で主演した「アイアンマン」が大ヒットし、コメディ「トロピック・サンダー　史上最低の作戦」でアカデミー助演男優賞にノミネートされ、完全復活を果たすと、アクション大作「シャーロック・ホームズ」（10）と続編「シャドウ ゲーム」（11）の名探偵ホームズ役も当たり役となった。アイアンマン／トニー・スターク役では、「アイアンマン」続編2作に加え、「アベンジャーズ」シリーズ（12～）、「シビル・ウォー　キャプテン・アメリカ」（16）、「スパイダーマン　ホームカミング」（17）などに出演し、「アベンジャーズ　エンドゲーム」（19）までの一連のマーベル・シネマティック・ユニバース（MCU）作品の中心的存在として活躍した。 クリストファー・ノーラン監督の歴史映画「オッペンハイマー」（23）で第96回アカデミー助演男優賞を受賞。その他の出演作に「ジャッジ　裁かれる判事」（14）などがある。
